Frozen Wonderland! Creator Q&A with Mackenzie Lynn!

Comedian, vlogger, and master impersonator Mackenzie Lynn has made a huge splash online since debuting her Disney Princess inspired sketch comedies and parodies. She is probably best known for her signature Frozen videos, in which she and her real-life sister team up to embody the much beloved royal sisters of Arendelle, with plenty of hijinks ensuing.

It felt appropriate then, to catch up with Mackenzie during this magical time of the season, to talk about her plans for the holidays, fav gifts, and of course, find out what Anna would have in store for Elsa under the tree. Check out our latest Holiday edition of Creator Q&A below!

Hey Mackenzie! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer a few questions!

What’s your absolute favourite thing about this time of year?
I love the decorations and the constant Christmas carols in the background no matter where you go. It really is magical!

Any annual traditions you’re looking forward to particularly?
In my family, we always decorate the tree together which has already been done. But that is my favourite!

Are you planning any holiday content for Queen Elsa and Princess Anna or any of your other characters?
YES! I just uploaded our “JELSA Meets Elf on the Shelf!” I also have our Frozen Freestyle Part 2 (Anna and Elsa rapping Christmas carols) coming out, along with a commentary on Christmas Carols by Cinderella and Captain America whom I’m excited to introduce!

On that note, what’s it like filming in the real-world dressed in character? Any memorable encounters with onlookers?
Haha oh gosh! Well I’ve been in public dressed as a character as many times as I’ve been in public wearing sweatpants. So..that’s a LOT. I think when we have to be in public in costumes for filming purposes, it gets really difficult to get anything done. But filming our first “JELSA” video, we met a little girl who talked to us for a few minutes and now subscribes to our YouTube Channel – so that was pretty cool! Normally people will stop and ask us what we are doing, and ask for a picture with us. I’ll usually remain so in character that when they ask “What’s with the costumes?” I’ll respond with “What costumes? This is my outfit of the day?” But my favourite people are the ones that just keep walking as if they see something as random as Anna and Elsa in a grocery store every day!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever gotten Christmas morning? What about the best gift you’ve ever given?
I remember when I was 11, I got a pink Nintendo DS with Petz, Super Mario, and Princess Peach games and a stocking full of Disney things. We were leaving for Disney World in the next few days, and that was just the coolest gift ever, because I had something to play with on the plane!

But the best gift I’ve ever given would have to be the “co-dependent no more” book I got for Morgan as a joke this year! Or the unlimited sloth-themed items for my mom! (AKA coffee mug, scarf, bag, socks, etc.)

If you could live inside any Christmas movie, which one would it be?
Christmas with the Kranks. I think it’d be hilarious to have such passionate neighbors.

Final question: it’s always so hard buying presents for people with everything (like a kingdom), so what do you think Anna would buy Elsa?
I think Anna would buy her something very genuine and special, or something that would make her laugh a lot. So now that Elsa is seeing Jack, I’d say the “Codependent No More” book is spot on both genuine, and hilarious!

Looking to 2015: YouTube Creator Tips to Remember

Well it might be hard to believe, but here we are at the end of 2014! Where did all the time go? 2015 is already shaping up to be an epic year for online video and we’re going to be there every step of the way as you guys keep looking to grow your channels more and more!

What we’ve learned

Looking back on 2014, we got started on a ton of exciting new projects for our partners. One example is this blog that we launched at the end of August. It’s been our way of keeping the spotlight on the community, what’s trending, and offering up simple tips to get you YouTubing like all-stars.

In case you missed what we discussed so far, he’s a little recap to get you totally prepped going into the new year. We started things off with optimization strategies for your tags, titles, and descriptions, and then looked at the importance of staying engaging through comments and social media. After, it was time to make sure you were all getting with the program and keeping yourselves on schedule. Then we moved into creator tips to maximize your experience and reach on the platform, from pairing up your phone and becoming a master viewer, to making sure your channel is organized and branded. Finally, we told you how to collaborate and how to make sure you give the audience a reason to subscribe.

Moving into 2015

Now that we’ve given you the essential tools to succeed on YouTube, in this upcoming year we’ll be looking to keep giving you more of the same, but dig deeper into specific tricks and practices that you may not have thought about before, but soon won’t be able to live without. BBTV Tips: Measuring Success by Understanding Watch Sessions

How successful you are on YouTube comes down to how many fans you can attract. Simple as that. And building engagement with your current viewers is just as important, if not more, than finding new ones.

A great way to improve your success is by understanding how much content your viewers are watching and whether you’re doing everything you can do to get them to watch more. Here’s how:

Annotations, end cards, and playlists are your best friends on YouTube. Use them effectively and you’ll be able to retain more of your audience beyond just one view. The Annotations Report will help you determine the right spot to place one in. Consider optimizing or closing annotations that have abnormally high close rates (anything above 5%).

Playlists are a powerful way to extend viewing sessions thanks to auto-play. After you set them up, keep an eye to see which are performing best. Create an effective metadata strategy for each one so that viewers can find your playlist in search. Then, update and promote ones that are driving the highest watch time and keep changing up the order of videos so that the most popular are at the top.
