Back in 2011, mobile only accounted for 6% of YouTube views. Flash forward to today, and it accounts for more than half of total views, and YouTube on mobile devices reaches more 18-49 year olds than any cable network in the US. Think about that for a minute and let it sink in. As a creator, you need to shift your content strategies to take this huge segment into account, and ensure you’re not missing out on your mobile audience. To get you started, we’ve put together three easy steps to follow to break through on mobile.
Consider Filming in Vertical
For smartphone users, it’s just more natural to hold a device one-handed and upright, which makes the vertical format ideal for on-the-go viewing. In fact, Snapchat’s CEO recently revealed that vertical videos on their platform receive roughly nine times more engagement than horizontal, because users aren’t forced to change the way they hold their phone to view.
Optimize Your Video Thumbnail
Video thumbnails have always been a huge part of the picture on YouTube in capturing viewer interest, but on mobile you need to think smaller. As in how will this thumbnail look in such a small format? Make sure they are super sharp and crisp as well as readable in tiny size if text is included.
Use video titles which are mobile-friendly
The title of your video should also be optimized since titles get reduced when viewed in smaller devices. Therefore, front load your titles with the most important keywords.
